While Santa didn’t bring any more episodes, he did bring us two new crew members, namely ThaEagle and Bocom, who will hopefully expedite the fansubbing process. No doubt you have heard of them (if you’re the kind of anime fan who actually cares about the people doing all the work), and know that they’re srsbzns, much like the rest of us here at Norikumi.

The usual Scarywater torrent:
Lolipower! – Use the search box to look for Mouryou.

As for the bots, the episode is available on both Norikumi|Hako and Norikumi|Stall

Were you expecting, perhaps, chopped liver?

After weeks of hard work, fiddling around with everything in order to crank out the best quality, we present to you our first three episodes of Mouryou no Hako in eye-popping BD (though they come with certain caveats).

At first glance, you’ll notice the “not insignificant” file size. The reason for extra bang for your episode is the grainy nature of the video, and we decided that removing the grain might have detracted from the viewing experience the creators of the show intended us to have.

Another issue that might come up would be “Why isn’t it 1080p?”. The answer to this one is simple. The Blu-Ray video of Mouryou no Hako is simply an upscale of 720p, and keeping it as 1080p would have ultimately been a waste. With space/bandwidth/practicality in mind, we also opted for ordered chapters, the mechanics of which you may remember from our previous release. You will need the OP and ED in the same folder as the other episodes, and any player that supports ordered chapters will pick them up at the required time. Thus, considering the big file size for each episode, you will end up conserving a total of 1776 MB.

And last, but not least, and perhaps the question that may not have been asked, is “Why did it take so long?” Simply put, we had to redo all the typesetting, which was no small feat considering the amount of signs in this series. With this occasion, we’d also like to introduce one of our new staff members, Paradigm, to whom we owe a big debt of gratitude for putting up with our incessant nitpicking.

Now, for the sake of TL;DR, I’m gonna add more info here. We’ve made certain changes to the website, among the most visible being the new XDCC Bot List page, the addition of threaded comments, and the new “pretty” permalinks. More improvements will be made in the near future.

Expect 04 to arrive soon to an HDD near you. However. The release date for the other episodes is currently unknown, as people seem to be sequentially leaving on vacations, and the amount of work we can do at certain points is limited. As for me? I’m gonna have cold Mojitos in my cozy chair, getting tanned in front of my LCD.
As usual, we invite you to join our IRC channel at irc://irc.rizon.net/norikumi to idle around, and motivate us to work faster Up periscope!

So, it’s been a while since there’s been any update about progress on the blog. The main reason for this was because there wasn’t any. It is, however, quite amazing how quickly things can turn around. We have had the good fortune to acquire both a new TL (welcome zaudragon) and a new TLC (welcome sputnik). So what does this mean? Well, it means our main project, Mouryou no Hako, is back online. As we have previously stated, we will be working with the Blu Rays, which we are in the process of procuring.

As for our other project, Blade of the Immortal, the official status is that it is not dropped. That being said, our new staff have joined us to work on Mouryou, and so unless we find someone who wants to translate BotI expect progress on it to be slow to non-existent (If anyone reading this feels they’re up to the job, applications are open so feel free to drop by #norikumi and poke either myself or blackguard)

We at Norikumi are very excited that MnH is finally moving again, expect something from us in the not too distant future.

-Urexis

UPDATE: Whoever did it has our thanks. We’ve found the BD.

Well since Urexis hogged the first part of the post, quoting my tired self for your amusement, I guess I can afford to make an addendum here.

I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.

We’re not exactly gonna buy the BD box, since it’s 170 bucks – way above our budget. Instead we’re hoping that kind jp anons will have the heart to upload it on PD.

After considerable discussion in the dark and scary place that is our staff channel, we have all agreed that we are no longer going to continue releasing subs using the broadcast feed. Instead we are going to work with the Blu-Ray discs that are going to be available sometime in April. This is official, and our final decision.

Our reasons for doing it are as follows:

We’re not going to finish the series before the BDs come out. If we take an average estimate of mid-April for the release of the BDs, then that’s about 10 weeks from now, meaning we’d have to release more than one ep/ week to finish before they’re available. This clearly isn’t going to happen, and even if we could do it, who wants to start work again on a show they just finished?

One of the main factors that has been causing delays in the first place is the fact that the video source is a bitch to work with. If we use the BDs, not only will they look awesomely sexy (which is what the show deserves) but it’ll actually be less work for our encoder.

Also, don’t worry – we’ll be using the time to make sure that all the scripts are done and dusted come April – so we should actually be speedy with the releases for a change

Secondly, blackguard mentioned that we may pick up another series to fill the time. Well, it seems as though the full team is willing to pick up another project – the only problem now is that we don’t know what to do XD. If anyone has any suggestions for some good (preferably seinen, but definitely srsbznz) animu that would benefit from Norikumi brand quality, please feel free to let us know.

That’s all for now,

-Urexis

Meanwhile, enjoy our high-quality release of Mouryou no Hako episode 01.
The HD version is based on ordered chapters, so you need to download the OP/ED to be able to view the full episode.

Although I assume most of you know what this show is about, Urexis suggested doing a summary of the ep, so press “Read the rest of this entry »” if you want to know more about it.

Finally, episode one of this wonderful show. The series is set in 1952, just after the end of the Allied military occupation, and even with this first episode, there is already a hefty dose of WW2 imagery. This is by no means the focus of the show, but setting it in a somewhat (technologically) simpler time seems to allow a little more room for the ever prevalent mysticism to flourish.

The show deals with concepts of reincarnation, shared consciousness, and of course childhood rebellion spurred on by the all too familiar feeling that those around you “just don’t understand”. With surprises from start to finish, and the development of a truly touching yet tragic relationship, we at Norikumi can’t imagine you not falling in love with this beautifully animated show.

-Urexis

(p.s. A note concerning ordered chapters: As you can see, the OP/ED are separate files, you need to have these in the same folder for them to play, but so long as you do that they should play at the appropriate times during the EP. Our reasons for doing this are that the show is ridiculously pretty, and also the ED has a load of grain which munches bitrate like a stoned fat man eats cookies. More bitrate = greater filesize and if we gave you the OP/ED each time you’d be looking at nearly 500mb/EP which would make nobody happy. Ordered chapters don’t work in VLC so don’t ask us about it, neither do they work in MPlayer (sadly) although word on the grapevine is there may be a patch. Apart from that, enjoy )
